Two of the most popular visitor attractions in Hull could be closed for up to a year in preparation for the City of Culture celebrations in 2017.

The and , both situated in the heart of the city centre, will shut their doors to the public in order to undergo extensive facelift work ahead of the much-anticipated festivities.

New environmental control measures, lighting, heating and security will be installed at the Ferens as part of a £2.9m refurbishment.

It is the first major upgrade of the building since 1991. The work is required to meet professional museum standards that govern how materials are loaned from national institutions up and down the UK.

The New Theatre is to undergo a £6 million extension to accommodate bigger audiences and more productions.

Extra backstage space is being created along with increased stage capacity, while new parking arrangements are also in the pipeline to make it easier for touring companies to unload their equipment.

Council leaders say the closures are necessary as both venues will play a major part in the City of Culture year.
