A Hull man who started his own business is encouraging young people to consider becoming self-employed.

Dean McDonagh, 21, set up his own refuse removal business after becoming frustrated at only being able to get temporary jobs:.

“I felt low. I’m only 21 and I haven’t got lots of bills and massive amounts coming out of my account, but I was left thinking ‘I’ve only got three months of work here, how am I going to pay next months bills?”

After months of planning Dean now operates DM Rubbish Removals, and is looking to hire staff and secure more commercial projects.

Although his latest  venture has taken off, he says there needs to be more support for young people:

“When I was looking into funding, I just seemed to be passed from pillar to post. There didn’t seem to be much out there, so I decided to raise the money myself.”

Dean now wants other young people in his position to have the confidence to set up a business, without the fear of failure holding them back:

“If it fails, you can always go at it again. If you want it to work- and you put in the work yourself- then it will.”
