The Hull boss of Spencer Group says he can’t wait to collect his honour after being made an OBE.

Charlie Spencer, who launched the firm as C Spencer Ltd in 1989, said he was “totally surprised” by the accolade but is looking forward to collecting it alongside his wife.

He said his award, for services to the country’s economy and business, also honours all the staff who have helped to make the company a success over the last 25 years.

Spencer Group is now a national firm with offices in Glasgow and London St Pancras as well as at Humber Quays in Hull. The firm, which has won several awards, employs over 500 staff.

Mr Spencer said he was “thrilled” that the company has been recognised via his honour, adding that he’s built a “good engineering business”.

He said it is a privilege to be in a business that can provide jobs and help the local economy by putting funds back in.

He has backed schemes by CatZero, a youth charity, that aim to inspire Hull youngsters to set up their own businesses and also supports the city’s Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Asked about his personal reaction to being given an OBE, he said it was flattering and “completely amazing” but seemed to have come out of nowhere.

Spencer Group won best project at 2014’s Humber Renewables Awards and was given the large business of the year prize in 2013.
