Hull cyclists are unwittingly making it easy for thieves to steal their bikes by using a free app, local police have warned.

Strava is among the apps which can show a burglar a bike owner’s name and provide information about their cycle routes if they do not use privacy settings.

Rob Danby, a sergeant whose remit covers Hull central, urged people who use these cycling apps to make sure they activate privacy settings.

Sgt Danby said that bikers should also not post photographs of their bicycles on social networking sites.

He believes that thieves could be using Twitter and Facebook in conjunction with Strava to catch bikers out.

Apps including MapMyRide and Strava help users record route maps through satellites. They also provide information such as elevation, average speeds and how many calories are burnt on journeys.

But this data can be viewed by other app users, including thieves who can see precisely where bike owners live.
