Diana Johnson believes Hull deserves more recognition for its achievements – especially with UK City of Culture year fast approaching.

Her stance comes after Chancellor George Osborne failed to give Hull as much money as museums in London, despite hosting the UK City of Culture in 2017.

The Hull North MP believes Mr Osborne’s latest round of investment seems to favour the South.

She said: “We get £500,000 for City of Culture. He gave £150 million to the London Science Museum and the Museum of Natural History. £100 million to a new Arts Complex in Battersea. I think it was £140 million to develop cultural activities at the Olympic site. London’s important, of course it is, it’s the capital. But up north’s important too.”

She added: “I’m forever talking about it (City of Culture year) at Westminster, trying to make sure that all the MPs know about it, and that we get as many visitors as possible in 2017. As long as train services allow people to come to events in the city and travel at the right times. The last train out of Hull is at 9:30 in the evening and I think we need to look at that again for the City of Culture.”
