A Hull MP and one of his general election rivals have been left off the list of candidates on nearly 500 postal ballots.

The “embarrassing” gaffe emerged just over a week before the city and the rest of the country go to the polls.

Labour’s Kingston upon Hull East MP Karl Turner and Sarah Walpole, the Green candidate, were absent from the papers.

Polling officials said the ballots would be cancelled and reissued before May 7. A total of 484 papers went out with the oversight. The householders impacted will receive a printed explanation when their ballot papers are reissued.

Mr Turner described the fault as “embarrassing” for local authority officials.

Martin Deane, the Greens’ Hull agent, called the slip “unfortunate” and said the reissue would be cutting it fine. But he is hopeful they should be received in time.

Ian Anderson, the interim returning officer for the ward, apologised “unreservedly” for the glitch.
