An £80 million contract has been signed to bring three new Extra Care communities to Hull.

Hull City Council will work with housing care and support provider Riverside to deliver the developments aimed at people who need additional support to remain in their homes.

The developments will include 316 apartments on sites at Leads Road, Hall Road and Hawthorn Avenue. Work will start early in 2015.

Councillor Helena Spencer, portfolio holder for prevention and safeguarding adults, says the apartments will provide an alternative to residential care.

Councillor John Black, portfolio holder for council infrastructure and responsible for housing, adds that the new homes will complement current regeneration in Orchard Park, Newington and St Andrews.

He says the project will also help boost jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities for local people.

Leann Hearne, executive director of care and support from Riverside, says the homes will be centres of excellence for people with all kinds of health issues.

Work will begin on the Hawthorn Avenue development first, which will be followed by Hall Road and then Leads Road. It is hoped they will be finished between the end of 2016 and early 2017.
