Hospital employees across East Yorkshire and Hull are bracing themselves for next week’s planned strike action.

Junior doctors across the country are walking out next Tuesday (January 12) – something that has not happened for four decades.

Only emergency cover is being provided throughout the 24 hours.

It follows Tuesday’s (January 5) break-down of talks between British Medical Association (BMA), NHS employees and Department of Health officials.

Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust officials have appealed to patients scheduled for appointments or procedures at Hull Royal Infirmary or its other hospitals not to contact them.

They say that Trust staff will contact patients if anything changes and appointments have to be rescheduled.

The Trust’s assistant director of planning, Alan Harper, said: “We can expect this to lead to some local disruption for our patients and other clinical staff.

“Emergency care services will continue to be provided and people in need of urgent care will be prioritised during the period of industrial action.”

Further strikes are planned for January 26 and February 10. The former will see exclusively emergency cover offered over 48 hours. The latter will see full industrial action from 8am to 5pm.
