Text and email alerts are to be sent out to householders and businesses when parts of Hull are threatened by flooding, it’s been revealed.

The Environment Agency’s new warning system will cover around 100,000 homes and business properties in the east and west of Hull as well as the city centre.

The city has been hit by damaging and costly flooding several times over the last few years and the scheme is being launched to give people more time to protect themselves.

The automated alerts are aimed at giving residents and business owners a speedier and more detailed warning when there’s a chance of sea or river flooding.

People can also opt to receive alerts by phone or fax.

The agency’s flood resilience adviser, Kim Tan, says the new system will help to give people more time to protect their families, homes and businesses when there is a risk of flooding.
