Hull health officials are turning to Spain and Bulgaria to recruit nurses.

The new hiring campaign follows difficulties finding qualified locals who want jobs in the profession, despite there being a nursing school in the city.

The successful European applicants would fill vacancies in the two leading hospitals in East Yorkshire.

It follows a similar campaign more than 10 years ago when Hull’s nursing numbers were boosted by a stream of Filipino staff.

The search was announced at Hull City Council’s health scrutiny meeting.

Liz Thomas, secretary of the trust, expressed a desire to enlist UK nurses.

But she said there is not sufficient interest in such posts, with local nurses seemingly lured by jobs in London and Manchester instead.

Ms Thomas said that some overseas nurses who have recently joined have already gone back after short stays.

She said that people have to question whether employing an overseas nurse for half a year is preferable to leaving such a post vacant for that time.
