Hull-based meat producer Cranswick has revealed plans to buy poultry firm Benson Park for an initial sum of £17.7 million.

Benson Park, which is also based in the city, supplies ingredients to the convenience and food service markets, while Cranswick supplies several supermarkets.

The plans to buy Benson Park were revealed as Cranswick announced that its revenues dropped by 0.4% to £481.5 million over the six months to the end of September.

Cranswick also reported that its pre-tax profits dropped by 5.4% to £24.6 million, while its sales of fresh pork fell by 13%.

Adam Couch, the company’s chief executive, said the fall in pork sales was down to business that had been lost earlier in 2014, but this lost ground is now being recovered.

While fresh pork sales were down, those of sausages, bacon, cooked meat, sandwiches, continental products and pastry increased during the half-year period.
