Friends Judith Rymer and Lesley McGuinness are urging Hull and East Yorkshire’s internet novices to attend free classes this week (October 17-23) as the region celebrates a nationwide initiative to encourage more people to use the internet.

Get Online Week, which runs between October 17 and 23, attempts to show people how using the internet can make their lives easier, healthier and more fun.

KCOM is supporting this year’s initiative by offering members of the public the chance to attend a free drop-in session at its Learning Zone on Carr Lane on Tuesday (October 18) from 9.30am to 11.30am.

All people have to do is show up during this two-hour time slot to learn how to set up computer equipment, access, write and send emails and other skills.

First-time participants Judith and Lesley attended KCOM’s last monthly drop-in session – held at the Learning Zone on Tuesday, October 4 – and they are encouraging others who aren’t well versed in using computers to follow their lead and attend Tuesday’s event.

Lesley, from west Hull, said: “I wanted to come along to learn how to use my tablet from scratch. Now I can send emails and I’m chuffed. I’m going to find out some of my friends’ and family members’ emails addresses and send them emails.

“Don’t be frightened. Apparently you can’t break these devices unless you stamp all over them. Taking part in a class is the only way you’re going to learn how to use them and be happy with them.”

Judith, also from west Hull, added: “I think it’s a good idea to come down to this type of session because they’re very helpful. I’m sure I’ll be turning up again so I can learn more computer skills. I just want more knowledge.”
