Christmas revellers in and around Hull are being warned about the need to drink responsibly on Mad Friday.

This is traditionally the night when festive party-goers head out in their multitudes to make it one of the biggest social occasions of the year.

Humberside Police has sounded a cautionary note surrounding the last chance for a Friday night drink before Christmas Day.

A spokesperson said that over-indulgence can result in drinkers being more susceptible to crimes such as serious assaults.

Police and hospital staff are on standby as bars, clubs and pubs anticipate one of their busiest nights.

The last Friday before Christmas 2013 saw alcohol sales in restaurants, bars and pubs jump by 114% compared to typical Fridays.

“Panic Saturday” (December 20) is due to follow “Mad Friday” with Hull’s shops likely to be packed with shoppers buying last-minute Christmas presents.
