Tenants in Hull and the surrounding areas are paying record average monthly amounts on their rent, latest figures show.

Humber and Yorkshire renters typically spend £552, according to Reeds Rains and Your Move estate agents’ numbers for October.

Overall, the report shows tenants in Wales and England are now shelling out £432 per annum (£36 a month) more to landlords than they were this time last year.

Average monthly rents across the country are down, however, from September’s record-high £816 to £806 last month.

This is still £36 per month more than the £770 lettings customers were paying during October 2014.

East Midlands tenants, like their Humber and Yorkshire counterparts, are also paying unheard-of sums for their monthly living accommodation – at a typical £604.

The estate agents’ director, Adrian Gill, says the nationwide fall reflects the passing of the peak renting season. This is when graduates and students are looking for properties close to their new job and university respectively.

Mr Gill believes several renters are being unreasonably “stretched” by the sums involved and it is still a landlords’ market.
