Hull looks set to get a new leisure centre in a bid to help the city’s fight against obesity.

Initial plans suggest that the £6 million complex will comprise a spa, spectator seating areas, changing rooms and a 25-metre-long swimming pool.

It is believed that the amenity could be sited adjacent to Woodford Leisure Centre’s existing facilities on Holderness Road.

Councillors haven’t yet decided whether a gym will be included in the new complex or whether the current Woodford one will be upgraded.

They hope the planned East Hull leisure centre will help to combat the city’s rising obesity problem. Since 2011 alone, 424 people across East Riding and Hull have had stomach-shrinking operations in an effort to lose weight.

Hull’s cabinet will decide whether to sanction the plans a fortnight on Monday (October 27).

If approved, work is likely to start early in 2016 with a finish planned for 2017 when Hull is due to become UK City of Culture.

Woodford’s leisure pool looks unlikely to be scrapped in the revamp.
