In the week when the government called for improved and more consistent connectivity for rail users, Hull Trains has announced that it’s world-first 4G-enabled Wi-Fi is receiving record use and reviews by passengers.

Hull Trains is the only UK operator that currently offers all passengers free, 4G-enabled single-sign-up (SSU) Wi-Fi to give users a reliable and super-fast Wi-Fi connection throughout their journey.

Travellers on-board the service gain free access to all of The Cloud’s 22,000 Wi-Fi hotspots for a near seamless experience. The SSU function means users only have to register and log in once, without having to log in again each time they make a new trip.

The 4G system provides download and upload speeds which are typically around nine times faster than previous 3G onboard capability. The enhancement of the service has also seen an overall growth of 37% bandwidth availability per user.

Hull Trains’ Managing Director Will Dunnett said the aim was to provide on-board internet access closer to the experience people expect from home broadband.

Since its launch, the overall number of users of the Hull Trains Wi-Fi service continues to rise with a record high of nearly 20,000 users in May 2015. Sessions also increased month-on-month by almost a third, up to 30,000 from 21,000 with an average session length of around 1 hour 15 minutes.

Will explains: “We knew how important connectivity was to our passengers and that’s why we implemented the 4G single-sign-up service last year – well ahead of the government’s call for action for all rail operators. The very fact that most of our passengers are using the service for over an hour speaks volumes – as does the continual increase in the number of users. It shows that the service we are providing is consistent, fast and fit for purpose for today’s modern passenger.”

The government has now called for evidence from rail operators for solutions that will ensure passengers get the best possible deal and the mobile connectivity they want and need for years to come.

Will says: “We are delighted that the government is now responding to passengers’ need for a reliable, high-speed Wi-Fi service and welcome their pledge to invest in equipping trains with new Wi-Fi equipment. Hull Trains has paved the way in this arena and while the industry is working government, the telecoms industry and others to deliver better connectivity for passengers, Hull Trains is already ahead of the curve.”
