When it comes to internet usage, Hull leaves Greater London behind according to new research.

No other northern city can top Hull’s 89.7% of adults going online over the last three months – the Government-based Office for National Statistics (ONS) found.

This figure leaves Bradford, the next best-placed northern rival, 24 places behind. It is a huge improvement on last year’s UK net-use league table positioning when Hull finished 86th.

Experts attribute Hull’s climb to the evolving landscape of the city’s digital environment.

KC has put Lightstream within the reach of 45,000 Hull homes. This ultra-fast fibre optic service is being rolled out across a further 60,000 properties between now and 2017.

Sue Helmont, director of consumer services said KC has also tried to simplify the ways that new users get connected. These included affordable broadband deals, low-cost tablets and free city centre internet classes to help adults overcome confidence issues.
