A Hull resident has created a window display in his house to commemorate the moment on Christmas day in 1914 when British and German troops put their guns down for a game of football.

Ed Ullyart’s creation is part of giant advent calendar of window scenes on The Avenues that are lit up one by one as Christmas approaches.

The Avenues advent displays were started in the build-up to Christmas in 2000, when a couple from Switzerland suggested the idea.

Since then it has taken off to become an annual event, with around 200 houses taking part over the years.

Displays have ranged from the traditional to the innovative, with designs from the Disney film Frozen and Dr Who featuring among this year’s surprises.

But Ed Ullyart’s design depicting the unauthorised and spontaneous football game 100 years ago stands out as one of the more novel ones.
