Hull taxi firm 57 Cars will install CCTV cameras in its fleet of vehicles to protect drivers.

Boss Kevin Marsh says his staff are scared to drive around Hull after a rise in physical and verbal attacks.

He said: “A lot of it is on the nights. The drunk ones, they get violent. They’re not happy what they’re getting charged, fare-wise, they just get abusive.

“It’s not fair on the drivers. It’s making them go home early, so we’re losing work. Customers are ringing for taxis and we’ve hardly got any cars on because they’ve gone home early because it’s the time the drunks start coming out. They just don’t feel safe.

“It (the CCTV) safeguards the driver, because it happens, not just our office, it’s others. Racial abuse, physical abuse, hopefully it will cut that out and if anything does happen, we’ve got the evidence to prosecute and go from there.”
