Homemade and personalised gifts make Christmastime extra special. And don’t worry, as you don’t have to be an expert to create something wonderful that friends and family will adore for years to come.

Along with a range of craft supply stores in Hull, many places put on classes, workshops and groups to introduce you to the wonderful world of handmade.

Once you pick up the basic skills, it’ll be easy to give homemade gifts to loved ones.

Winter warmers

Everyone loves a woolly accessory at this time of year, and the traditional gift of a cosy jumper or knitted scarf has definitely made a comeback.

Never picked up knitting needles in your life? Don’t fret, Babes in the Wool run a Knit and Purl group every month. Learn to make your own knitwear and get advice from the friendly fanatics, who are always happy to share their tips and tricks.

The group meets every third Tuesday of the month at Relax Café (51 Newland Avenue, Hull). Visit their website or call them on 01482 446307 for more information.

A crafty Yuletide

There are plenty of other things to be made at this time of year, from beautiful decorations to unique gifts. Larger stores like Hobbycraft are perfect for stocking up on all sorts of supplies, from card toppers to bake off goodies, and even wreath-making kits.

Meanwhile, The Moon on a Stick, located above Nostalgia (107 Newland Avenue, Hull), has a whole host of workshops for you to attend this Christmas. From as little as £12.50 you could learn how to create your own candles, seasonal decorations and lampshade fairy lights. The price includes all materials needed for the project, plus you get refreshments and learn a brand new skill along the way. Visit their Facebook page or pop into the shop for more details on what’s on offer and how to sign up.

Card making

Even in a world of social media and advancing technology, card giving still proves popular at Christmas. What better way to show someone you care than hand crafting a personalised greeting?

Studio Craftique in Hessle (10 Walrus Arcade, Prestongate) not only have all the supplies you’ll ever need to create something magical, they also offer a vast selection of craft courses and classes. One that is highly appropriate for this time of year is their card making course.

Whatever your skill level may be, they will guide you through the techniques needed to make stunning cards for your friends and family. They also run kids’ classes, where little ones can explore their budding creativity. See their website for more information.

Pottery painting

Another delightful present to give during the holiday season is a piece of personalised homeware. There are several spots in Hull and East Yorkshire where people can paint ceramics and pottery. Gabrielle’s in Anlaby (19 Hull Road) stocks an array of plates, bowls, mugs, wall tiles and even storage boxes. Meanwhile, Tea & Bisque-it (155 Kingston Road, Willerby) invite you to create your own masterpiece whilst enjoying a slice of cake. Alternatively, head to Saramique Studio (9 South Lane, Hessle – pictured), where you can appreciate a refreshing coffee and paint your own pot.

It’s a great activity for all ages and perfect for a girl’s night out, then you get to take the memories home at the end of it all.

Get stocked up

We’ve already mentioned a few places in Hull to pick up your handmade essentials. However, if you want to get even more inspired, be sure to visit the Christmas Craft Fair that The Deep is hosting Saturday 26 – Sunday 27 November. Entry is completely free and the market opens at 10am, closing at 4pm.
