Motorists in Hull have been told to expect further delays as maintenance work continues on the Humber Bridge.

Traffic is currently reduced to a single lane in both directions as the A-frames – which connect the main span bridge deck to the towers – are replaced.

Frustrated drivers have reported queuing for up to half an hour on the bridge during peak times. But they will have to put up with the traffic for the coming months as the work is not due for completion until spring.

The Humber Bridge Board has received several complaints, while toll booth employees have also come under fire.

Bridgemaster Peter Hill says managers are trying to find ways of increasing traffic flow so that disruption is kept to a minimum. Traffic is currently down to single file to prevent overloading the bridge.

Unrelated work is also under way to install the new electronic tolling system. Once completed it will speed up crossings for motorists, but until then more traffic can be expected as motorists make their way across the bridge.
