More than 150 jobs are to be created in the next three years after plans were announced to build an aeronautical training academy at Humberside Airport.

The £5 million facility will be BAE Systems’ UK base in training apprentices for the servicing and maintenance of fighter jets.

BAE Systems director of aircraft maintenance and support, Martin Blaze, said that the new hub would allow apprentices to be trained to the “highest level of competence”.

With around 60 apprentices being enlisted on an annual basis, the academy will feature workshops, a hangar and training aircraft.

Mr Blaze confirmed that recruits are expected from as far afield as Oman and Saudi Arabia to learn skills that they will then take back to their country.

Humberside Airport commercial director Paul Litten claimed that the “prestigious development” was another indication as to how important the travel hub is to the local area.
