Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Grove has welcomed recent crime statistics which show that the region has not experienced an overall increase in crime.

According to Office for National Statistics figures, total crime stayed the same across the Humberside Police force area – compared to a national increase of seven per cent.

ONS figures indicated that there were 66,487 crimes recorded, excluding fraud, in the year ending September 2015 – a zero per cent increase compared to the previous year.

Mr Grove said: “There’s only nine forces in England and Wales that have managed to maintain crime levels or reduce them and Humberside is one of those.

“So this to me is a really good positive indication that the changes we brought in to modernise Humberside Police have started to get results.”

Reports of sexual offences in the region rose by 12 per cent year-on-year – compared to a national increase of 37 per cent. Mr Grove believes that could be down to a greater willingness of victims to report crimes.

He added: “The vast majority of victims in the past have not had the confidence to come forward and report. So an increase is actually positive.

“We know that people are coming forward. We must catch this minority of people who are preying on vulnerable people.”
