Humberside’s Police and Crime Commissioner says he believes capital punishment should be brought back for certain crimes.

Matthew Grove made the comments in a recent episode of Humberside Police’s Eye on Crime series.

He told KCFM that he believes there are certain offences that warrant the death penalty:

“I don’t believe in widespread use of capital punishment, but I do believe in it for the brutal murders of children and vulnerable people.

“These are individuals that we have a duty to protect, and that’s why we need to send out the message that if you sadistically murder our children, you will pay the ultimate price.”

Mr Grove added that he believes the public should have a greater say over the sentences imposed on criminals:

“It is a matter of opinion over severity of the crime, and by involving the jury you are involving the public as a whole. Our justice system is there to serve and protect, and I think the public should have a greater say in the nature of punishment and how we protect our society.”
