Operations carried out by armed police in Hull and the East Riding have almost trebled over two years.

Figures have revealed that armed police have been deployed on 171 occasions so far in 2014, almost three times as many as the 60 call-outs throughout 2012.

The figure more than doubled last year when firearms officers were deployed 139 times.

The number of deployments in Hull has more than doubled since 2012 but incidents across the East Riding have increased by more than 500%.

Firearms officers were despatched 47 times in Hull in 2012 and this went up to 97 in 2013 and stood at 100 as of October 15 2014.

A total of 13 incidents took place in the East Riding in 2012, which increased to 42 last year and as of October 15 this year, was at 71.

Superintendent Darren Wildbore, of Humberside Police, said the rise in deployments was the result of a change in operational practices and was in line with national guidance.
