Humberside Police is warning drivers to remain vigilant after a spike in thefts from cars parked in hotel and leisure club car parks across the East Riding.

Motorists are being advised to park their cars in well-lit parking areas, preferably with an attendant or CCTV, and to keep all valuables out of sight.

They should also lock all car doors and close all windows every time they leave their car and never leave identification or vehicle registration documents on show.

Detective Inspector Philip North said that thieves did not worry about damaging the vehicles of people they robbed.

He said a huge amount of damage would often be done to get a relatively small item, if it was left on show in an unguarded, unwatched car.

DI North added that the cost of repairs to the car often far exceeded the cost of the actual theft in the first place so it was important to take preventative measures and report thefts quickly.
