Humberside Police are attending a special occasion this week to ensure that people never forget the Holocaust.

The force’s Stephen Mirfin is speaking at the Holocaust Memorial Day’s event at Grimsby Institute for Further and Higher Education today.

The function aims to mark the Holocaust at the same time as trying to explain how it relates to modern hate crime.

The Jews and other communities suffered dreadful treatment at the hands of the Nazis, including extermination and imprisonment.

Mr Mirfin, Hate Crime and Diverse Community Co-ordinator at Humberside Police, said that people should never forget what happened during the Holocaust.

He said that the Holocaust also targeted the disabled, gypsies and travellers as the Nazis sought to identify those who did not fit with their system.

Gypsy Roma Traveller Police Association representatives are also attending the commemorative event.

Many Jews mark the day by lighting candles of remembrance, hoping to ensure the memory of the event is kept alive.
