Hymers College in west Hull has come third in a list of the best independent secondary schools in the north of England.

The rankings, compiled by the Sunday Times Education Supplement, were based on the percentage of pupils gaining A* to B grades at A level and A* or A grades at GCSE this summer.

As well as coming among the top schools in the north, the Hymers Avenue school has risen to 94th in the national rankings, from 181st last year.

This year all of the top three independent schools in the north are in Yorkshire, with Queen Ethelburga’s College, near York, at number one, and Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield in second.

Hymers also appears in the yearly Parent Power guide, where parents are given a chance to compare the performance of a school with others in the same town or local authority, or to see how it compares on a national basis.

The guide covers the top 2,000 state and independent schools around the country.
