Today is International Literacy Day, so we’re discussing the importance of good literacy with the Hull branch of in2wrk.

in2wrk is an adult training company that specialises in helping you to upskill in your current job or find new employment. With eight learning centres in the north of England, including the one at Shirethorn House on Prospect Street, in2wrk is dedicated to delivering quality English, Maths and IT courses to thousands of people in the city.

“This year, in2wrk saw a 47% increase in the number of people completing English courses at our Hull centre,” Jack Johnson, Marketing and Communications Manager at in2wrk, tells us.

With the rapid advancement of digital technologies, our way of life is changing. To help everyone to keep up to speed, the focus of this year’s event is Literacy in a Digital World.

Digital innovation has provided new opportunities for people to improve many areas of their lives, whether that be access to information, networking, types of employment and social services. However, there are still a lot of people in the world that lack the key literacy skills needed to benefit from digital, and the fear is that they will become marginalised in an increasingly tech-focused society.

A global event is to be held today at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris. Here they will take a closer look at what kind of literacy skills people need to be able to navigate digital media.

A good level of literacy and ability to access digital media also goes hand in hand with the world of careers:

“We’re finding that literacy is crucial when it comes to employability,” Jack stresses. “Nowadays, employers are asking for English and Maths qualifications at Level 2 (A*-C grade at GCSE) as a bare minimum. Without these, candidates are simply not getting through to the interview stage for a number of roles in Hull.”

Incredibly, in2wrk offers English courses from Entry Level 3 up to Level 2, completely free for eligible adults.

“Having a good understanding of literacy not only helps when you’re applying for a job – it’s also very useful when dealing with everyday tasks that involve reading, writing, speaking and listening,” Jack points out. “in2wrk have lost count of the number of people that we’ve helped improve all-round confidence through our free English courses.”

If you are looking to refine your level of literacy, Jack has a few tips:

“We’d certainly encourage anyone who’s looking to improve their literacy skills to check out in2wrk Hull. As I’ve mentioned previously, our English courses are free and we deliver the Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2 programmes,” he explains.

In2wrk’s courses will teach you about vocabulary, punctuation, different types of written texts and all other aspects of the English Language.

“All of which will help you in your day-to-day life, as well as in the workplace and during job-seeking.”

A good English qualification is great for your CV. It proves to your potential employers that you can demonstrate a good knowledge of language.

“We allow people to work at their own pace. Our friendly tutors will be on hand in our learning centre if extra support is required,” Jack adds.

If you or someone you know is interested in signing up for a free English course, visit the in2wrk website or give them a call on 01482 935295. They also have a drop-in session on Thursdays between 10am and 4pm at Shirethorn House.
