Industrial chic dining in Hull’s vibrant Fruit Market

With a popular restaurant already in Leeds and two in York, a new branch of Ambiente Tapas opened at 5 Humber Street last year.

Converted from one of the old warehouses that formed the original fruit market, the surroundings are the perfect mix of modern elegance and industrial chic.

Open seven days a week from 11am until 10pm, Ambiente is an extremely welcoming dining destination. Accommodating couples, groups, families, working lunches and those in search of a quick drink, it really is perfect for everyone.

We visited this week to enjoy some of their many tapas dishes. Upon entering we were offered a warm greeting and shown to a table of our choice, with the option of a VIP booth.

From here our customer experience continued to be smooth and of a high quality, with team members always in sight and ready to offer help and suggestions.

A good example of this is when one of our party wanted a sherry but wasn’t sure which to get, as the menu presents dozens of varieties.

He was recommended Palo Cortado, which combines the sharp aroma of an amontillado with the full bodied richness of an oloroso. This was an excellent choice, which was repeated later in the evening.

As for the meal, we ordered a wheel of pintxos. This is a platter of white anchovy fillets, Manchego cheese and serrano ham, each served on bread and arranged around a small bowl of olives.

Feeling extremely peckish, we also went for a vegetarian wheel of pintxos. This consists of broad bean and rosemary pâté, tapenade (a dip made from black olives, capers and anchovies), and sun-dried tomato and feta.

On top of this was a helping of chorizo y patatas (caramelised chorizo and potato), plus a morcillo. This is Ambiente’s own blend of Yorkshire sausage meat and Spanish black pudding, wrapped around a soft boiled quail’s egg and deep fried until golden brown.

You guessed it, it’s a Scotch egg with a European twist!

All of the above was well presented and packed with flavour. Everything was clearly made with fresh ingredients, yet very quickly prepared.

From where we were sitting we could even see the chefs working away in their shining kitchen, which added to the atmosphere.

Going back to the sherry, this is the “new old” drink that’s coming back into fashion, similar to the previous gin revolution.

Ambiente Tapas presents an impressive sherry menu, including the fino, manzanilla, amontillado, oloroso and oloroso dulce varieties, as well as a few sweet sherries and even some special old sherries.

If you’re new to the beverage, Ambiente also serves flights. A flight takes the form of 50ml glasses of three featured sherries, from the Introduction Flight through to the Very Rare Sherries Flight. They’re perfect for the beginner and the aficionado alike.

Overall, our visit to Ambiente Tapas was a very enjoyable one. The food is excellent and affordable, the drinks menu is outstanding and the staff are friendly and helpful.

They accept walk-ins, or you can book by calling 01482 426126. You can also view the menu beforehand online.
