Former Hull East MP John Prescott has been banned from driving for six months.

The 77-year-old was clocked in his Jaguar travelling at 60mph in a 50mph zone in the Lincolnshire village of Scampton. He was returning to his home in Hull late at night when he was snapped by a police speed gun.

He will not be allowed behind the wheel of a car again until November, after he picked up 12 points on his licence.

Lord Prescott, who was also deputy prime minister and transport secretary during a long political career, admitted he had no excuse to break the speed limit, especially as he had been involved in anti-speeding legislation.

In addition to the six-month ban, he was also fined £250 following the hearing at Grantham Magistrates’ Court.

The retired MP has previous when it comes to speeding. Back in 1991, he was banned from driving after he was caught travelling at 101mph on the M1.
