John Prescott, the former MP for Hull East, has revealed plans to advise a future Labour government on climate change.

Lord Prescott, 76, who represented the constituency for 40 years until 2010, is to become an unpaid adviser to Ed Miliband, the man he hopes will become the next Prime Minister.

If Labour wins the General Election it is understood the former Deputy Prime Minister’s work would focus on advising the government on climate change discussions that are scheduled to be held in Paris later this year.

Writing in the Sunday Mirror, Lord Prescott says he wants to raise ambition on climate change to benefit future generations.

Lord Prescott was the EU’s head negotiator during the talks in Kyoto, Japan, in 1997 which led to the first global agreement on carbon emissions cuts.

Mr Miliband has said he wants December’s talks in Paris to set a target of achieving net zero global carbon emissions in the second half of the 21st century.
