Pupils from Sirius Academy North have been learning about the world of sports reporting on an educational programme supported by KCOM.

The ‘Supporter to Reporter’ scheme is delivered by Run With It which offers challenging and innovative learning activities for children from the KCOM Stadium’s education centre.

KCOM supported the 10-week programme for a group of Year 7 pupils from Sirius Academy North who worked on their literacy, IT and teamwork skills.

The programme, which aims to give young people skills and confidence through sports reporting, also gave the pupils an opportunity to put their newly developed journalistic skills to use in a mock press conference.

Hull FC first-team squad members Dean Hadley and Jack Downs were put on the spot in the stadium’s media suite with the pupils asking questions about their careers and lives away from rugby league.

The programme will end with the students attending a Hull FC home fixture and producing a report on the game.

Melanie Johnson, from Run With It, said: “The ‘Supporter to Reporter’ programme offers a fantastic opportunity for both academic and personal development. It inspires and motivates the students whilst giving them skills and experiences they will never forget.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to KCOM for funding this programme, and also to Hull FC. Without the support of both, the students wouldn’t have had access to such fantastic opportunities.”

Brendon Smurthwaite, KCOM community coordinator, added:“The ‘Supporter to Reporter’ scheme is very engaging and uses the power of sport to help children enhance their literacy, numeracy and communication skills.

“Taking a tour behind the scenes at the stadium and interviewing two professional rugby league players will have been a tremendous experience for the children.”
