KCOM has revealed the locations in Hull and East Yorkshire where ultrafast fibre broadband will become available between now and next March.

During the next six months more than 25,000 properties will be able to order KCOM’s ultrafast Lightstream service, which can deliver download speeds of 250Mbps (megabits per second) for residential customers and one Gigabit per second for businesses.

Areas to go ultrafast in November include streets around Willerby Road and Beverley High Road in Hull as well as parts of Anlaby, Kirk Ella, Hedon and Preston.

In December Lightstream will become available in the Stoneferry area of Hull, including Leads Road and Foredyke Avenue.

During February and March Beckside and Flemingate in Beverley, streets in Hessle including Tranby Avenue and Jenny Brough Lane, and parts of Willerby including Main Street and Well Lane will all be connected to Lightstream.

The information released by KCOM today includes street-level detail of where the service will go live before the end of 2016 as well as the broad areas where it will become available between January and March next year.

The release of the next phase of KCOM’s fibre rollout plans follows the announcement last month that the deployment has already passed 100,000 properties, a milestone that was achieved earlier than originally planned following KCOM’s decision to accelerate the pace of its rollout. By December 2017 Lightstream will be available to 150,000 properties.

KCOM’s chief marketing officer Cathy Phillips said: “Since increasing our investment in our fibre deployment, Hull is well and truly the UK’s ultrafast city. We’re connecting a new customer to Lightstream every half an hour and as our rollout continues to gather pace we’re very happy to be making Lightstream available to areas in the east, west and north of the city as well as in many surrounding towns and villages over the coming months.”

Hull is the only ultrafast city in the UK where broadband with download speeds of at least 100Mbps is being made available as standard. This is because KCOM is installing fibre cables all the way from its telephone exchanges to customers’ properties. In most of the rest of the UK, fibre cables are typically laid only as far as telecoms cabinets in the street, with copper cable forming the final connection to the customer. The result is slower download speeds that vary according to how far a customer lives from the street cabinet.

Details of the next phase of the rollout can be found at www.kcomhome.com/Lightstream . Customers in the rollout areas announced today can also register their interest in Lightstream on KCOM’s website to take advantage of priority booking for installation appointments before they become available to the general public.
