Firefighters were still tackling a large blaze in a Grade II listed chapel in Hull on Wednesday morning after a fire started in the early hours.

The George Lamb Memorial Chapel in Lambert Street, off Beverley Road, was reported to be alight at 3.30am.

A Humberside Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said the building, which is not currently in use, was still on fire this morning but firefighters had managed to get it under control.

The chapel has been on the buildings at risk list for 15 years and Hull City Council wants to buy it. It said in February that it would be issuing a compulsory purchase order to acquire the site and redevelop it.

Humberside Police closed off Lambert Street at three locations, Beverley Road, Prince’s Road and Newland Avenue.

Residents living close to the chapel were evacuated as a precaution in the early hours but were allowed back home later in the morning.
