Dudley-born wordsmith Rob Barratt promises mind-bending poetry and a hilarious, energetic performance at East Riding Theatre this Friday.

The former teacher, who has always had a passion for spoken word and folk music, is heading to the beautiful Beverley venue and assures us that it will be one hell of a night.

“It’s somewhere between standup comedy and a music show. I’m a comic poet, but I also sing. I write all of my own stuff and there’s some humour in there too,” Rob tells us.

It all started around a decade ago, when Rob picked up a pen and started to write down his funny thoughts and rhymes.

“I’m actually a retired special needs teacher,” he explains. “I used to sing in folk bands and started coming up with my own stuff a few years back. My work is mainly song parodies and poems. Most of my stuff rhymes, but some of it doesn’t,” he chuckles.

He’s really enjoying travelling around the world with his talents:

“I’ve been to Australia, Ireland and all over England. Last week we were in Salford, Manchester, as I was on my way up to the Lake District Folk Weekend. I have my camper van, it’s great,” he enthuses. “I mainly play literary festivals, folk events and small gigs.”

It was Chris Wade, East Riding Theatre Music and Comedy Programming Director, who thought it was a perfect idea to bring Rob to Beverley. The event will take place in the Cafe Bar, which serves tasty light bites as well as soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.

“I’m very much looking forward to visiting the area. I don’t know East Yorkshire that well, so it’ll be fantastic to have the chance to explore,” adds Rob.

As well as his hilarious poems, witty satire and musical ensembles., Rob discusses some very important topics, including data-driven education, Neanderthals and the weather in Scotland.

He also has strong opinions on sea life, shabby-chic furniture and tuk-tuks. This performance is certainly not to be missed if you like to giggle at the modern world.

“I just love performing. I have loads of energy and love getting people to laugh, groan and sing. That’s what will be happening at East Riding Theatre on Friday,” he exclaims.

On a last note, Rob hopes that new fans will give his show a go:

“I know I’m not famous by any stretch of the imagination. I tickle people’s brains, that’s what I do,” he points out. “It’s brain-tickling, word-mangling fun. It’s wordplay and that’s what I love doing; messing around with words and rhymes.”

Rob Barrett comes to East Riding Theatre tomorrow evening. Tickets are £10 and can be purchased by calling 01482 874050, or you can book online.
