There will be no Liberal Democrat candidates competing in the three upcoming East Riding Council by-elections.

The party has decided not to compete in Bridlington Central and Old Town, Willerby and Kirk Ella and Howdenshire because of the amount of “time, effort and money” it would have had to put into each ward.

All three, which boast big Conservative majorities, are up for grabs following the recent deaths of sitting councillors Ray Allerston, Angela Ibson and Doreen Engall. Voting will take place on November 27.

Labour, meanwhile, has opted to not put forward a candidate in Bridlington Central and Old Town.

The Lib Dems used to hold the balance of power in the early years of East Riding Council, when no political party was in overall control at County Hall.

Its decision to not put forward candidates for these three wards has surprised supporters and opposition alike.
