Leading businesses in East Yorkshire have thrown their weight behind the idea of an elected Yorkshire mayor.

Arco, Wykeland Group and JR Rix and Sons are among 24 companies that have signed an open letter calling for devolved powers so more decisions can be made at regional level.

In the letter, bosses of the firms add their support to “the concept of a regional Yorkshire mayor”. Working alongside local leaders and businesses, the mayor will be responsible for the delivery of any devolved powers and will have “credibility to put our case and argue our corner on a national and international basis”.

The Government has pledged to give regions with elected mayors more control over their own affairs, but the idea has sparked a heated debate across Yorkshire.

Some council and business leaders want to see the creation of a single Yorkshire authority, while West and South Yorkshire authorities are pursuing their own plans.

Calls for a Humber mayor were made in a recent letter signed by the Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce, the Institute of Directors and the Federation of Small Businesses.
