Today is Wine and Cheese Day. We’ve got some excellent tips from local experts Majestic Wine Warehouses on how you can celebrate.

Majestic is located in Beverley. The branch is part of the UK’s largest wine retailer, with over two hundred stores nationwide. They have one of the biggest and best ranges of wine out there, offering free in-store tasting every day so that you can be sure to choose a bottle you love.

We spoke to Jack Merrylees, PR and Events Manager at the store and Beverley native, to find out more about what’s available.

“All of our staff are experts, passionate about the wine they sell. We’re not stuffy or pretentious, we just love to share our knowledge and get people interested in wine too,” enthuses Jack.

“There are over 1,250 different wines online, many of which are in our stores. Our most popular at the moment are New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, Prosecco, and Provence Rosé.”

The wine merchants has recently launched its Majestic Loves range, which has taken the public by storm.

“You’ll find these fabulous entry-level wines in all of our stores, wrapped in illustrations by Jean Jullien. Each bottle is priced at just £5.99,” Jack tells us.

“The range includes a few surprising admissions, such as wine grown in Hungary and Romania. Both of these areas are becoming increasingly popular for their wine.”

Enjoying a glass of wine with cheese has been a traditional custom for centuries. The sharp taste of the alcoholic drink seamlessly contrasts with the pungent flavour of cheese, leaving us wanting more. Wine and Cheese Day is a recognition of this delightful combo.

“People often think of red wine when they think of cheese, but Emily, our new manager, is of the opinion that the ultimate match is goat’s cheese and a French Sauvignon Blanc, like a Sancerre,” explains Jack. “This is because the fresh acidity cuts through the creamy texture of the cheese just beautifully.”

Jack also recommends big, rich, mature cheeses with heavier reds, explaining that the pairing of protein with tannins in the wine combine to soften the food and drink. He also thinks that a delicious dessert wine goes perfectly with blue cheese.

If you want to sample some of the vino on offer at Majestic, you can choose from an array of wine tasting courses. Their introductory course will teach you all about pairing.

“Emily, who joined our team very recently, is keen to get to know some of our old customers as well as meet new ones, so pop in and say hello,” he adds.

Meanwhile, Majestic offers free delivery on orders with six or more bottles. So if you were planning on celebrating Wine and Cheese Day in style, simply head to their website or give them a call 01482 868050.
