A woman from Market Weighton is raising awareness of a condition that caused her to pull out her hair.

26-year-old Rebecca Germaine has struggled with trichotillomania since the age of 13 and tried a number of treatments to stop the habit.

She wants to remove the taboo around the condition: “It’s really quite a difficult condition to live with but even though you’re conscious that you’re doing it, you’ve still got no control over it. It’s not like nail-biting where it doesn’t matter. To be bald is just horrible. A woman’s hair is her crowning glory.”

Rebecca’s broken the habit through behavioural therapy and specialist hair treatment But says it can be costly: “The system costs just short of £3,000. Then every six weeks, it costs about £250 to get it adjusted. It’d be nice if the treatment I’ve had is more accessible, for example through NHS funding, that would be amazing because it is really, really expensive.”

She says people suffering with the condition shouldn’t feel alone: “It’s easy to think that you’re the only one in the world that does it, and you’re not. There’s more people in the world that pull their hair out than there are with green eyes. A lot of people, maybe not to the extent that I’ve done it, but people over-pluck their eyebrows, or people just pull their eyelashes out. So there are different forms of it.”
