MEP for Yorkshire Mike Hookem wants to see an agreement with Belgium, where British border control and customs would be situated, preventing any migrants from boarding a ferry to get to England in the first place.

He says security has to be improved: ” I traveled through Calais and looked at all of the small ports and I could see that was a weak point, there was little or no security. This is where the migrant worry starts to come through and we’ve seen now with these 18 migrants that were stopped at the port of Hull, that they’ve latched onto this and this is where they’re going to get through.”

He explains his proposals: “British customs would be situated in the Belgian ports, such as Zeebrugge, and the migrants could then be stopped at that port, rather than getting into the UK port, because once they’re in the UK, we have the problem of repatriating them back from where they came.”

He explains why security needs improving: “The border control are being cut back, the finances are being cut back and I believe that we need an agreement with Belgium, the same we have with France, where border control and customs are actually situated in Belgium.”
