Residents of East Yorkshire and the surrounding areas are being warned to prepare for extreme cold in the next few days.

The Met Office has issued a Level 2 cold weather alert across the entire north of England, including Yorkshire and Humber, the north east and the north west.

Dr Tim Allison, East Riding’s director of public health, says that most of the advice on keeping warm in cold weather seems like common sense.

But he says it’s important that people should think about how the cold can affect them, their friends and their families, particularly the elderly.

Maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures of at least 18 degrees is an important part of avoiding cold-related illness, he says.

And Public Health England is also advising people to have lots of hot food and drinks to keep them warm in the cold weather.
