More than a million illegal cigarettes have been seized by Border Force officers at Hull docks.

Smugglers had attempted to hide the illicit goods inside a shipping container that arrived at the port from Rotterdam in Holland last week.

Officers discovered a total of 1,050,000 cigarettes hidden inside shrink wrapped boxes labelled as roofing materials.

If the smuggling attempt had been successful, the cigarettes could have cost the Treasury an estimated £250,000 in unpaid duty and VAT.

Mark Robinson, Border Force assistant director for the Humber Ports, praised his officers for their work in stopping the shipment and says they regularly foil smuggling attempts like this.

By seizing the cigarettes they have “starved those responsible of the proceeds of their criminality”, he adds.

Border Force is urging anyone tempted to buy cigarettes and tobacco on the cheap to think twice as the black market “cheats honest traders and it is effectively stealing from the public purse”.
