Today sees the start of Movember, so we caught up with Humber Street hairdressers Mousey Brown’s to find out how you can get involved.

Movember is an annual event that aims to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide. The Movember Foundation, as well as other male health charities, encourage people to grow moustaches to help raise much-needed funds to tackle these problems.

It’s a light-hearted way to make a seriously positive impact and help reduce the number of men that are prematurely dying.

According to the Movember Foundation, one man in the UK dies of prostate cancer every forty-five minutes. Meanwhile, testicular cancer is the most common cancer in guys under 40. It has been suggested that men die, on average, six years earlier than women do.

The Movember Foundation is working very hard, and by 2030 it hopes to have reduced the number of men dying early by 25%. This is a huge task, especially without government funding, so the charity needs your support to succeed.

Mousey Brown’s are looking for Mo Bros to join their Movember team. We spoke with co-owners Sarah Clayton and Andrew Hampel to find out what this involves.

How can people get involved with Mousey Brown’s Movember?

Andrew: On Wednesday 1 November, we will have a shave down to give our Mo Bros the perfect level playing field. Your donation of £10 will include your shave, a pint and a pie, plus a bit of entertainment. We also have some special treats for the Mo Sistas who come down to support their Bros.

You can also pop in across Movember for free growth advice and some encouraging words from our team. We’re giving out free sweets for Mo Bros for tash-enhancing energy (although this isn’t medically-proven).

Sarah: The aim is to get as many of your friends and family to sponsor you as possible. The team member with the most sponsorship will win a prize, which will include some of our high-end Evo Products.

If you haven’t become too attached, you can finish the month with a shave off, or if you’ve grown to like your new furry features, we can just give you a trim.

Andrew, you already proudly sport facial hair, and Sarah, you’re an acclaimed stylist – do either of you have any styling tips for Mo Bros and Sistas?

Sarah: First of all, you should treat your facial hair as you would the hair on your head. It’s important to wash it and condition it.

Andrew: Yes, I agree, especially in the morning. You need to make sure any drool is cleansed away from a deep sleep.

Sarah: A fine comb is useful to ensure there are no dead skin cells hanging in there.

Andrew: Or crumbs, or worse. I would avoid eating jam doughnuts, unless you’re in private or near cleaning facilities. It can get messy.

Sarah: If you trim it, you need to use your lips as a guide and keep it neat, but for Movember, you should keep growing and then comb and style with wax.

Andrew: If it grows quickly and you don’t trim, you need to get used to your tash entering your mouth and tickling your tongue when you slurp coffee.

You can find Mousey Brown’s at 14 Humber Street. In the meantime, check out their Mo Bros team page.
