Around 38 jobs are expected to be lost after Morrisons announced it would be closing its branch in Bransholme.

The national chain said the supermarket at North Point Shopping Centre in Goodhart Road is one of 10 branches across the country that will close following poor sales figures.

Hull North MP Diana Johnson said that the closure was “worrying” for the area.

The store moved into the building previously occupied by Netto in June 2011, initially creating 25 jobs. But it is now thought some 38 employees will be made redundant.

Mrs Johnson said that the closure was “bad news” for North Point and the wider area, especially given the lack of good full-time jobs and the number of job-seekers vying for those that are available.

She said the closure was proof that the economy was still “fragile”, with the latest closure following that of Comet and other shops in Hull in recent years.

The rise in popularity of smaller budget chains such as Lidl and Aldi has hit the sales at the UK’s big four supermarkets – Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda and Morrisons.
