A fifth of people in Yorkshire and Humber are smokers, according to the (ONS).

The region has the highest prevalence of smokers anywhere in England, with 20.1% of adults smoking.

Not far behind is the North East and North West, both with 19.9%, as northern areas dominate the top of the table.

England has the lowest level of smokers compared to the rest of the UK, with 18%, while Scotland has the highest, with 20.3%.

Yet the overall number of people smoking nationwide continues to fall on an annual basis.

Just 18.3% of all UK adults smoked last year, down from 18.7% in 2013. Back in 2010, the figure stood at 21%.

The proportion of smokers has been falling for decades. For instance, 46% of adults smoked in 1974.

But there are still over 100,000 smoking-related deaths every year among people aged 35 years and over.

The ONS data also shows men are still more likely to smoke than women, with 20.7% of them smoking compared to just 15.9% of their female counterparts.
