A letter from Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt says the money would have to come from elsewhere in the NHS.

Hull North’s MP is calling for the Health Secretary to clear up any confusion about where the funding for contaminated blood compensation will come from.

There’s concerns about how the NHS will cope if it has to stretch budgets even further if the compensation money will be taken from existing NHS budgets, which have already faced huge cuts.

MP Diana Johnson’s seen a letter from Jeremy Hunt, saying victims would be paid by the NHS.

But she’s worried about the knock on effect on local services:

“I was shocked to hear that because i was expecting the gov to find additional money to compensate people not take it from the front line of the NHS which we know is under such enormous pressure at the moment.

“I think any reduction in the money that’s available to frontline staff, nurses and doctors and our local hospital in Hull clearly will have an impact on what local people will receive from the NHS.”

Ms Johnson says they need to re-think their plans:

“What was in the letter that was most disturbing was a paragraph which read that any money that’s found to compensate these people will be taken from money used to provide public frontline NHS services.”
