A convicted murderer is on the run and could still be in the East Yorkshire area after absconding from a Hull bail hostel.

Police say 53-year-old William Kerr is “dangerous” and should not be approached. He was jailed for life for murder in 1998 at Leeds Crown Court but was released from prison on licence on January 23 this year.

North Yorkshire Police are leading the hunt for Kerr. He has links to the North Yorkshire region as his probation officer is in Selby, but police say they have no reason to believe he is there at the moment.

He is also known to have connections in the region covered by Humberside Police as well as London.

Police say he needs to be found, arrested and taken back to prison as soon as possible. They have released a photo and want people in East Yorkshire to be on the lookout for him but they stress that he should not be approached.

Det Insp Eamonn Clarke says anyone who thinks they know where Kerr is should call 999 and let trained officers investigate and deal with him.

He says Kerr would be wise to hand himself in to police.
