David Smith of Hull and East Yorkshire Mind believes the media can have a big impact on peoples confidence in mental health services.

The Chief Executive of Hull and East Yorkshire Mind is concerned people could be put off from seeking help for poor mental health.

David Smith says we have a good support service in place to, but believes the media could be portraying a different view.

He explains more:

“I’m worried that with all the negativity, people might not approach mental health services for help. When they really need it, they might think it’s not there, or it’s not any good, or the waiting lists are too long.”

He believes too many horror stories of healthcare are being published, putting people off getting advice.

But David says we do have strong services ready to support those in need:

“At the heart of our health service, actually, we’ve got good clinicians, doing good work and for most people, it’s a good experience. We just need to make sure it’s for all the people, not just those few who get through.”
