60 apprentices will be trained at a new £5m academy at Humberside Airport each year, over the next three years. It’s thought that 150 jobs will also be created.

Aircraft Maintenance Director, Martin Blaze, explains what the students will be doing: “Some of them will be what we call spanner turners, working on the aeroplanes to a level of qualification that enables them to do that. Some of them will become analysts where they’re analysing the continuing air worthiness of the aircraft during its day-to-day operation.”

Claire West completed an apprenticeship and is now back to train the new recruits.

She’s keen to share her experiences: “It gives them some inspiration when they’re sat in the classroom going through exams, day in and day out, they know that, ultimately, they’re going to be working on really interesting aircraft.”
